Tunisian Blogger Meetup on April 24th

Finally, the date, time and place for the first Tunisian Blogger Meetup is set.

It’s going to be on Sunday, April 24th at 7PM in Biwa (Les Berges du Lac).

For more details and to confirm you’ll be attending, go to the Tunisian Blogger Meetup event page.

I hope everyone blogging from Tunisia can make it. I can’t wait to meet you all.

And hey, please spread the word and promote the meetup on your blogs too so we can get as many people as possible there.

Used Book Shops

I’ve always been one big book worm. Ever since my childhood I’d go through one book after the other. I guess it’s because of my love for stories and letting my imagination run wild in recreating them and the worlds they happen in.

Anyway, a couple of weeks ago, I stumbled across a used book shop in Colisée Saula in Manar 2, and ever since then I’ve been hooked and actively looking for other ones like it.

I’ve come across another interesting one in Rue d’Angleterre where I bought Siddharta by Hermann Hesse, the book I’m currently reading.

It’s quite hard to come by good new English books in Tunisia, just a handful at Al Kitab bookshop, El Moez bookshop and the book fair. So it’s cool that a person can find some interesting stuff scattered around in these used book shops.

There’s also another side to used book shops that I like; the fact that all these books were read by someone else before you, taken care of and saved, and that they’re somehow being passed on to you.
It reminds me of this interesting site I found a while ago called BookCrossing. Book Crossing is the practice of leaving a book in a public place to be picked up and read by others, who then do likewise.

I truly think used book shops are as important as libraries and new book shops as they have some books you couldn’t find elsewhere and make book prices more accesible to everyone.

Tunisian Blogger Meetup

I’m trying to organize the first Tunisian Blogger Meetup this month.

The initial feedback I’ve had from some bloggers for the when and where for the meetup is as follows:

When? The time some suggested and that seems to be good for everyone up to now is a friday afternoon after work. I’m thinking something like 7:30PM on April 22nd.

Where? The main places that were suggested are:

– Downtown Tunis (e.g. L’Etoile du nord).
– Les Berges du Lac (e.g. Biwa)
– Sidi Bou Said (e.g. Sidi Chabaane Caf

No Internet Caf

As I mentioned before, we spent the past weekend in the island of Djerba in the south of Tunisia.

Anyway, even though this trip was meant as a break from our everyday life and the complicated life of the city, we found ourselves looking for an internet caf

Tunisiana launches “Ma Tunisiana”

Tunisiana, the first private mobile operator in Tunisia, has launched a new web based service called “Ma Tunisiana” (My Tunisiana).

Ma Tunisiana currently provides the following services online:

– Sending, receiving and archiving SMS messages.
– Checking your credit.
– Checking how much you’ve spent up to the day before.
– Changing your personal preferences on whether you would like to receive SMS ads and newsletters, or appear in the user directory.
– And soon, checking your invoices and their details.

I think this is great. Bravo to Tunisiana for this.

Even though we in Tunisia are still a bit behind in the mobile telephony sector and the services available through it, I think this is a very good step forward.

Tunisiana has been the force driving this sector in Tunisia by offering new services and pushing Tunisie Telecom into following them.

Hopefully “Ma Tunisiana” will keep growing to provide more great services and stuff like Mobile Email, content subscription possibilities, Web to MMS, …etc.

I think it’s also time MMS and GPRS services are introduced from both operators.

Lablabi, Fast Food

Lablabi

Tonight, we felt like going to Halfaouine in Les Berges du Lac for some yummy Lablabi.

Lablabi is a Tunisian fast food made up of bread crumbs, boiled chick peas, eggs, tuna, harissa (hot Tunisian chilli sauce), capers, cumin, olive oil and a little bit of garlic.

It’s a weird mix, but it’s great 🙂
If you ever visit Tunisia, make sure you try it out.

The photo should give you an idea of how it looks.
Yummy…

Tunisie/Blogs

Thanks to Houssein, at last Tunisian blogs have an aggregator: Tunisie/Blogs.

I’ve been thinking about this for a while and emailed Houssein with my thoughts a while after he started TN-Blogs, the Tunisian blog directory. It’s great to see the mixture of our ideas come to life 🙂

The blogs are mainly in French and English with occasional posts in Arabic.

This, I think, is a really important and cool development for the Tunisian blogosphere.

Do check it out: Tunisie/Blogs.
