Tunisian Blogger Meetup 3

With a number of Tunisian bloggers abroad coming to Tunisia towards the end of June, I think it’ll a great time for the third Tunisian blogger meetup.

I suggest we have it on Sunday, June 26th at 7:00 PM.

As for the place, according to the feedback from the last meetup, the suggestion is somewhere in El Menzah.

Please send me all your suggestions for the place you think would be best.

I hope everyone can fit the meetup into their schedule and make it.
I can’t wait to meet you all ๐Ÿ™‚

Emigration

Yesterday, I found these really interesting numbers about Tunisian emigration on Zizou from Djerba‘s blog.

– 80% of Tunisian youth would like to emigrate.
– 80.000 to 100.000 Tunisian youth leave Tunisia each year (Some come back of course).
– 25 to 35% of Tunisians abroad are jobless.

According to statistics from 2003, the number of Tunisians abroad is 850,000. 6000 of them are students.

Even though these numbers might not be 100% accurate, I do believe that they are pretty close to reality and I think they’re very interesting.

I’m sure numbers like these are reflected throughout the Arab world with only slight differences.

A common idea between Arab youth nowadays is that the only solution to a better life is to emigrate. The choice of countries to emigrate to depends on the country of departure, for example in French speaking North Africa the most popular destinations are France and Quebec (Canada), in the Middle East it’s more like Canada, USA, New Zealand…etc.

But it’s not always true that a better life awaits these emigrants. As numbers show, a lot of them end up jobless and on the streets.
Still some are able to build great lives, that’s true too.
It all depends. It’s pretty risky.

I think the whole issue of emigration is a very sensitive one. It’s a shame when some of the best minds in the country as well as its youth find themselves tempted to leave. It’s a big loss for the country. But still I do understand how some of them feel.

After The Second Tunisian Blogger Meetup

We just got home from the second Tunisian blogger meetup ๐Ÿ™‚
It was awesome. We all had a magnificent time and so much fun.

Turnout was a bit less than for the first meetup, 10 people turned up, one of them a guest. The blogs represented in this meetup were: Evil Drako, Adib, La Blogeuse, Imaghreb, Chikipi, Staka, Zizou from Djerba, AquaCool and Subzero Blue.
It was great meeting everyone again and getting to know the new people.
We all wished more new bloggers turned up and that the bloggers we already met last time could have made it this time too.

The meetup was held at the Sidi Bou Said port caf

Tunisia Blogger Meetup 2

After the success of the first blogger meetup and the positive feedback that came out of it from all the bloggers, I think it’s about time we organize the second one.
Hopefully this time more people will be able to come and it’ll be more fun ๐Ÿ™‚

As for the time and place, all your suggestions are welcome, so just leave a comment or send me an email with your preferences.

As for me, I’m suggesting Sunday 22/05/05 at 7PM.
As for the place, I’m thinking maybe somewhere in Sidi Bou Said this time. A place where we can all sit together around some joined tables.
What do you guys think?

Can’t wait to meet you all again ๐Ÿ™‚

Blogger Meetup Photos

Well it’s about time I posted a photo from the first Tunisian blogger meetup. So here’s a teaser ๐Ÿ˜‰

I have some other photos, but some people in them chose to remain anonymous, and I respect their wish for privacy.

Don’t ask me who every person is, try to guess ๐Ÿ˜›

Daylight Saving Time

So after a number of years of not changing time, Tunisia is back to applying daylight saving time starting this year.

Clocks will be advanced by one hour on midnight this coming Sunday, May 1st.

This comes as a move by the government to try and promote saving of energy in the wake of the ever-rising cost of fuel in the world market.

Doesn’t bother me at all.
In fact it adds an extra hour of daylight to the summer days, so one more hour of summer fun ๐Ÿ˜‰

After the First Tunisian Blogger Meetup

We just got home from the first Tunisian Blogger Meetup at Biwa in Les Berges du Lac.

It was a lot of fun and really cool to meet all the bloggers who came. We really wished everyone else could have come too and we remembered the bloggers outside Tunisia too. I hope next time more people will come, including our expats, and we’ll have more fun.

We were 16 all in all, a lot more than I expected to show up. So that’s really great ๐Ÿ™‚
The following blogs were represented today: Mouse Hunter, Pens

Mouled & Assida

Today is the birthday of Prophet Mohamed (PBUH), so best wishes to all Muslims everywhere.

The occasion is celebrated in different ways around the Muslim world.

In Tunisia, every home makes Assida, a pudding-like sweet delicacy based on zgougou, these little black seeds taken from a pine-like tree. I don’t know what they’re called elsewhere as I’ve only seen them used here in Tunisia.

I absolutely love Assida, It’s one of my favourite sweets.

On this day family members visit each other and take some assida with them to share. In fact, in the past when people used to care more about their neighbours, they’d also go out and give their neighbours some assida too.

Eman, my wife, made some great Assida this year. I’ll go get myself another serving. Yummy.

Make sure you taste Assida if you ever visit Tunisia. It simply rocks.
