Kill Bill 2

So, I finally got to see Kill Bill 2. And well, no need for me to say how good it was and all, you already know that by default.

This movie doesn’t have as much gore and violence as the first one and focuses more on the characters, which I thought was good.
But even though it cuts down the violence, the movie still moves on at the same pace and keeps you at the same level of excitement.
It only slows down towards the end and stops short of giving you the big ending you’d expect, which kind of bugged me.

I also found some kind of humour in it, or maybe I’m just weird ๐Ÿ˜›

The cinematography and photography is perfect and unique, it plays a really big role in the how the movie sucks you in.

Overall, it’s a great movie, and I really enjoyed it.
I’m surely going to talk my wife into watching it so that I can see it again with her ๐Ÿ˜›

Film deal for ‘Baghdad blogger’

So, Salam got himself a film deal.

Salam Pax is an Iraqi blogger who started a blog called Dear Raed as a way to keep in touch with his friend Raed in Jordan.

The blog became an internet sensation during the Iraq war as he talked about life during the war and the fears and hardships of Iraqi citizens.

He previously got a book deal, and the book has been released in several languages. The book was called “The Baghdad Blog” and the film will be based on it.

I used to really like the Dear Raed blog and Salam’s humorous way of writing, but ever since he got famous and started doing book deals and interviews and all, he sort of let it go and his blog kind of lost it’s spirit and life.

I’m more into his friend Raed’s blog these days.

And just an extra bit of information for those who’re interested, this blog competed as a finalist against the Dear Raed blog for the Best Middle Eastern or African Blog in the 2004 Bloggie Awards.
Dear Raed won, but for a new blog Subzero Blue sure did great ๐Ÿ˜‰

M.C. Hammer

Last night, as I was zapping through the different satellite channels, I found a movie about M.C. Hammer on Multivision.
Having one of those flashback moments, I decided to watch the movie.

It was a nice movie, not anything extraordinary, but nice in a way that it introduced me to his life, how he made it, and how his musical career all ended.

It definitely brought back a lot of memories of the times when Hammer was at the top of his game, when it was “Hammer Time”.

In fact, the first music tape I ever bought was an M.C. Hammer album “Please Hammer, Don’t Hurt ‘Em” including his hit single “U Can’t Touch This”.
Being a music freak, I also remember detecting that the whole catchy tune of that song was actually a rip off from an older song from the 80’s called “Superfreak”.

I didn’t really like much of his work after that, but still Hammer is one of the people who helped in making rap more mainstream.

Man, I remember how my friends and I used to listen to his songs, how we’d be trying to copy his dance moves and all.
Some of my friends even went as far as copying his hair style.
Thank God they didn’t go any further than that, because that guy’s sense of style sucked like hell.

Those were some good times though ๐Ÿ™‚
Oh, memories…

Kill Bill 2 Trailer

Kill Bill 2

A new Kill Bill 2 Trailer is out, and some reviews of it are available here and there.

I’ve been dying to see this movie ever since I saw part one last year, and by the looks of it, I think I won’t be let down, not that I ever expected to be.
Tarantino is a master of his craft, and knows how to tell a story in his own unique way of film-making.

We open on The Bride, aka Black Mamba (Uma Thurman), driving a convertible. The camera is trained close on her face. Her hair is blowing in the wind. She tells us she is on her way to kill Bill.

Man, I can just picture that in my mind and see how great it’s going to turn out.

Tarantino rocks!

The movie is due to be released on April 16th in the US.

Disney’s Toy Story 3 ?!

Disney is planning to make Toy Story 3 on its own as a theatrical feature after its deal with Pixar ends next year, Disney Studio Chairman Dick Cook said.

Cook did not rule out the possibility that the sequel might go directly to home video, but said, “My hunch is big screen.” He added: “I think it deserves it. These are two of the most beloved characters in the last generation. Buzz and Woody are fantastic characters, and I think that is something that would fit on the big screen nicely.”

Well, it’s true Toy Story 3 deserves to be big screen, and Buzz and Woody are great characters, but I just feel that without Pixar behind the wheel, this will be a miserable failure.

First of all, Disney suck big time in sequels. No Disney sequel has been even a fraction as good as the original.
Secondly, this is a Pixar creation, no one can do it better. They made a great first one and followed it with a great sequel.
Finally, I don’t think Disney’s 3D animations are anywhere as good as Pixars.

I think it’s a shame Disney are going to screw up something as great as Toy Story.

Oscars 2004

Finally Lord Of The Rings got the awards it deserved. In fact, it nearly got all of them.
This year’s oscars were swept away by Lord Of The Rings, winning all 11 Oscars that it was nominated for. Now, that’s beautiful.
The movie really deserves every single oscar it got, and every single one it didn’t get too.
It’s the movie of the century.

Finding Nemo won for best animated feature film, and of course I agree.
Pixar rule.

Sean Penn who usually is a bad boy standing against the Oscars, went along this year and won the Best Actor Oscar.
Charlize Theron won Best Actress Oscar for her role in Monster.

Sofia Coppola won best screenplay for Lost In Translation. A movie i’m dying to see.

And well for the full list of winners, go here.

The Danish Experience

We went to see “Al Tagroba El Denmarkiyya” (The Danish Experience) starring Adel Imam this past saturday, and it was a good laugh as expected.

Adel Imam is the king of Arab comedy, and his movies and plays are always the funniest and greatest to watch.
His works are a mixture of a lot of humour, a true sense of patriotism and a take at the important matters at the time.

This movie, though not as powerful as some of his previous works, was a good one and full of laughs.
The main issue it tackles is sexual culture, which is still handled as a taboo issue in most of the arab world. It shows how there is a need for sexual culture to be introduced to the people without going as far as the west.

The movie also focuses on other issues like the importance of family, the misuse of power, greed and freedom of speech.

Adel plays the role of a high ranking government official, who actually becomes the Minister of Youth. He has 4 sons who he has been very close to through the years, being both father and mother to them.
Lebanese Nicole Saba (one of the original 4 Cats), plays the role of a danish lady who visits Egypt to work on a report of hers and study the issue of sexual culture in Egypt. Being the sister of the wife of Adel’s character’s friend, she stays at his home with his 4 sons.

Things already go mad having a chick like her in the house, but to make things worse she starts teaching his sons and him about sex and whatnot.

I don’t want to ruin the movie for the people who haven’t seen it yet, so I’ll just stop here and tell you that you should see it if you can.
Any Adel Imam movie is definitely worth seeing.

Great Expectations

Last night, I caught Great Expectations on one of the TPS Cinema channels, and I thought I’d watch it again.

As a big fan of Charles Dickens, I always loved the story and have read the book a number of times.

The movie is a modernization of the story in the book, which I think is great as long as they’re able to keep the spirit of the original too.
I really liked it when it was released back in 1998 and enjoyed it again yesterday.

Oh and one more thing. I love the soundtrack.
