Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow

Last night I watched “Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow“.
Now, I have to say that I totally pre-judged this movie. I saw the trailer and I didn’t like it, and I rented the movie sure that it would be a bad boring movie and a waste of money. The only reason I rented it is to see how bad Jude Law, Gwyneth Paltrow and Angelina Jolie could get ๐Ÿ˜›
But, I have to admit it turned out better than I thought, not that much better, but still better.

The movie takes another direction, visually speaking, than the rest of the movies coming out these days. It’s very 1930’s Art Deco with bits of Neo-Futurism and uses a mostly digital backdrop.
I liked the visual effects and work put into this movie although I’m not a big fan of the 1930’s feel.

It’s a Sci-Fi Adventure movie and the story starts after New York City receives a series of attacks from giant flying robots. A reporter teams up with a pilot in search of their origin, as well as the reason for the disappearances of famous scientists around the world.

All in all, I think it’s an ok movie. The kind I’d only see once.
Anyway, if you’re into sci-fi adventure movies that feel like they’re from the 1930’s, then this should be your cup of tea.

I give it a score of: 5/10.

Shark Tale

Last night I finally got to watch “Shark Tale“, a Dreamworks animation about a fish called Oscar who wants to become a somebody and who claims he is a shark slayer to get there.

This turned out better than I expected. And I have to say Dreamworks Animation are getting better and better at this.

A bunch of great actors did the voices for the characters: Will Smith, Jack Black, Ren

Saw

We just finished watching “Saw“, and damn that was one creepy thriller scary movie.

Just the fact that someone can come up with such sick ideas is scary, lol.

I don’t want to get into details and burn the movie idea for you, so here’s just a little overview. It’s about two men who wake up to find themselves shackled at opposite ends of a nasty-looking toilet as part of some sort of game by a serial killer nicknamed “Jigsaw”.

It’s one of the best scary movies I’ve seen in a while. The last one maybe being “The Ring“.

If you’re into horror and thriller stuff, you should check this movie out.

My score for it is: 8/10.

They’re already working on a sequel.

The Big Bounce

Yesterday, we rented “The Big Bounce“, featuring Owen Wilson, Morgan Freeman, Charlie Sheen and Gary Sinise.

This was supposed to be a comedy/con movie, and with a pretty good cast, I thought it would be a nice movie. I was wrong.

This movie totally sucked. It’s not funny at all, the characters suck, the story sucks, the con sucks, everything sucked!

I can’t understand how some actors can agree to do shitty movies like this one.

Don’t rent this movie if it’s the last movie you haven’t seen in the world. It’s simply not worth the time.

My score for this movie: 0/10.
yep, it’s that bad.

And for the rest check out the Oscar Winner List.

I’m very happy Jamie Foxx got the Oscar for best actor, he truly deserves it. He was awesome as Ray Charles. Nobody could have deserved that award more than he did.

I must see Million Dollar Baby, it seems like one great movie.
Congrats to Clint Eastwood for taking the best director Oscar. Tough luck for Scorcese. (I can’t believe Martin Scorcese has never won an Oscar up to now.)

Ray

Today we watched “Ray”, the movie about the extraordinary life of Ray Charles.

This is one great movie. Jamie Foxx did an amazing job as Ray Charles. He truly deserves an Oscar for this role. He wasn’t acting, he simply became Ray Charles. Awesome acting.

I’ve always been a fan of Ray Charles and seeing this movie gave me insight into his life, music and genius. I truly enjoyed every moment of it.

The soundtrack was beautiful too, full of great Ray Charles songs. I’ll sure be getting it and enjoying it time and again.

This movie is a must see. It will satisfy both the music and cinema fan in you all.

My score for it would be: 10/10.
One of the very best movies of the year 2004.

The Life of David Gale

Last night, I watched “The Life Of David Gale“, a very good movie starring Kevin Spacey , Kate Winslet and Laura Linney.

It’s a drama/thriller about a man against capital punishment who is accused of murdering a fellow activist and is sent to death row. He asks for a reporter and grants her exclusive interviews over the 3 days before his death to talk to her about it all.

I really enjoyed this movie and would certainly recommend watching it.

Kevin Spacey obviously can do no wrong. All his movies rock.

I’d score this movie: 8/10.

The Forgotten

Last night we watched “The Forgotten” featuring Julianne Moore and Anthony Edwards.

It’s a suspense mystery thriller about a man and a woman who are told that their children never existed and that they made up memories of them, only to discover that there’s a much bigger enemy at work.

The movie was very promising at the beginning. It started powerfully and kept getting better and better until halfway through the movie, but then it degraded and dissapointed me.
Why? Because it turned sci-fi.
Now, I love sci-fi movies, but I believe this movie would have been much better if it steered clear of it.
I kept wishing for a twist that would bring the movie back to the great track it started on, but that didn’t come.

So in my mind, I’ve built my own alternate ending so that I can love the movie.

I still think the movie is pretty good though, and the acting was very nice.
I do recommend seeing it if there’s nothing better to watch, especially the first half.

My score for it is: 7.5/10.

The Incredibles

At last, I got to watch Pixar’s animation movie “The Incredibles”. Needless to say, I loved it like every other Pixar movie I’ve seen.

These guys are just so talented and their work is so beautiful.
From “Toy Story” to “Monsters, Inc.” to “Finding Nemo” to “The Incredibles”; the story, the animation, the music, they all rock.

The story for “The Incredibles” is a great one too. Very creative, fun and funny.
It’s about a family of undercover superheroes who, while trying to live the quiet suburban life, are forced into action to save the world.

The animation is amazing, paying so much attention to the smallest details creating yet another masterpiece.

As with all Pixar animations, the score I give is: 10/10.
It’s truly a must see!

I can’t wait for Pixar’s next movie “Cars”, due out next year ๐Ÿ™‚

Karate Kid

A couple of days ago while going through the DVD section in Carrefour, I came accross the DVD set of the Karate Kid trilogy.

I was swept away to my childhood in one of those very sweet flashbacks. I remembered the very first time I went to the cinema in Zimbabwe to watch Karate Kid 1, how moved I was by it and how much I loved it.
I must have seen that movie a 100 times and loved it every time.
I’ve even watched it a number of times in Italian on RaiUno not having to understand the dialogue because I already knew it by heart.
It even made me start taking Karate lessons, lol.

I also remembered watching the 2 other sequels some years later in one of the summers I spent in Pakistan. It was so great going on with the story and following Daniel and Mr. Miyagi.

I also used to love playing the Karate Kid computer game on my Commodore 64. Many long hours and burning red eyes went into that one.

So with all that flashing in front of my eyes, I just had to jump on the set and buy it right away ๐Ÿ™‚

I started watching the trilogy again last night and WOW, I love it.
It looks so cool. You’d never think this was over 10 years old if you didn’t know it. Very good stuff.
I feel like a kid again, lol.
I must be the biggest Karate Kid fan ever ๐Ÿ™‚
