Yahoo Inc. is looking to boost its business in what they believe is the Internet’s next big growth area — voice communications.
Yahoo already has deals with several landline and wireless telephone companies, including SBC Communications, Verizon Communications Inc. and Sprint Corp., for a variety of Web-based services.
For what the future could hold, Yahoo points to its deal with Britain’s BT Group Plc, which sells the BT Communicator — a version of Yahoo’s Messenger that can not only handle voice calls between computers but make and receive telephone calls.
Anyway, some rumours are surfacing about talks between Yahoo and Skype, close enough that maybe even an acquisition is being cooked. Something like this would complicate Yahoo
THat’s kinda cool. Yahoo! are actually doing great. I’m really impressed with the Flickr acquisition.. it actually got better! Hope the rest of their acquisitions are as interesting… Now I’m really anxious to see the results of the Macromedia/Adobe merge.
Have you guys downloaded the latest BETA version of Yahoo Messenger yet? It’s actually pretty neat. The bf and I do our long distance phone call computer to computer (bf’s having problems with Skype right now) and we also get to leave messages for each other. It’s like our own little answering machine. I would call his computer, no one picks up, and I get to leave a recorded message for him. It’s really cool. Much better than our usually offline messages to each other. I hope this feature remains free once it’s no longer BETA.
Roba, yeah I agree, Yahoo! are cool again ๐
For some years they let themselves fall into the whole corporate world and stuff, but now they’re back to their good old self.
Jenn, no I haven’t tried it out yet. I quit using Yahoo Messenger a number of years ago. Anyway, I’ll check this version out. Sounds pretty cool.
Thanks for letting me know about it ๐
