Golden Chainsaw Award

Environmental group Greenpeace has nominated President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and five others for its first “Golden Chainsaw” prize — to be awarded to the Brazilian deemed to have contributed most to the Amazon’s destruction.

Figures released last week showed deforestation of the Amazon rainforest reached the second-highest level on record in 2003-2004 — an area of 26,130 square km (10,088 sq miles), driven by logging, ranching and farming interests.

The concerned public can vote online here while environmental activists and journalists will make a “critics’ choice”.

The winner, to be announced on June 6, will be awarded a statue made from illegally logged wood.

Podcast Support in Next iTunes

The next version of Apple’s iTunes software will support and organize podcasts.

Podcasts, which are sound files and audio content such as radio shows, have surged in popularity. They do not require an iPod to listen to them on the go. Any digital MP3 player will work.

“With the next version of iTunes, due within 60 days, there will now be an easy way for everyone to find and subscribe to” podcasts, the company said in a statement.

Steve Jobs, Apple’s co-founder and chief executive demonstrated on Sunday evening how Apple’s podcasting organization and downloading process would work within iTunes at a Wall Street Journal technology conference.

I think this is really cool.
I haven’t played around with podcasting yet, but it’s something that has been going through my mind lately and to see Apple jump on the podcasting wagon and make it more accessible is really great.

Web Hackers Hold Files Hostage

Your money or your files!

Security researchers at San Diego-based Websense Inc. uncovered the unusual extortion plot when a corporate customer they would not identify fell victim to the infection, which encrypted files that included documents, photographs and spreadsheets.

A ransom note left behind included an e-mail address, and the attacker using the address later demanded $200 for the digital keys to unlock the files.

I’m actually surprised this didn’t happen before.
I guess it was just easier to take the money directly instead of asking for it.
Something like this means hackers are running out of ways to steal money directly, which is more or less good news.

12 Step Program Of Recovery For Web Addicts

1) I will have a cup of coffee in the morning and read my PAPER newspaper like I used to, before the Web.

2) I will eat breakfast with a knife and fork and not with one hand typing.

3) I will get dressed before noon.

4) I will make an attempt to clean the house, wash clothes, and plan dinner before even thinking of the Web.

5) I will sit down and write a letter to those unfortunate few friends and family that are Web-deprived.

6) I will call someone on the phone who I cannot contact via the Web.

7) I will read a book… if I still remember how.

8) I will listen to those around me about their needs and stop telling them to turn the TV down so I can hear the music on the Web.

9) I will not be tempted during TV commercials to check for email.

10) I will try and get out of the house at least once a week, if it is necessary or not.

11) I will remember that my bank is not forgiving if I forget to balance my checkbook because I was too busy on the Web.

12) Last, but not least, I will remember that I must go to bed sometime… and the Web will always be there tomorrow.

Loooool…
Good one, lol…
I’m way past web addiction though, nothing can help me now ๐Ÿ˜‰

‘The Child’ Wins Palme d’Or at Cannes

Sibling filmmakers Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne’s “The Child,” about a 20-year-old petty crook suddenly faced with the responsibilities of fatherhood, won top honors at the Cannes Film Festival.

It was the second time a film by the Belgian brothers won the prestigious Palme d’Or, coming six years after their teen drama “Rosetta” took the main Cannes prize.

The award was presented Saturday by Hilary Swank and Morgan Freeman, who won Academy Awards in February for Clint Eastwood’s boxing saga “Million Dollar Baby.”

Sounds like a great movie.
Hope I get to check it out soon.

Greek Helena Paparizou Wins Eurovision

Helena Paparizou

Greek singer Helena Paparizou won the Eurovision song contest last night with her song “My Number One”, a mid-tempo tune with minor-keyed Balkan flavorings.

Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko presented her with the prize for her seductive performance of “My Number One”, saying “This is the prize for the song that unites all Europe”.

Eurovision is one of Europe’s most widely watched events, with more than 150 million people tuning in to this year’s edition.

Last year’s winner was Ukraine’s Ruslana. She startled the audience in Istanbul, Turkey, with her song “Wild Dances”.

Death

A distant relative of mine passed away, God bless his soul, and yesterday I attended his funeral.

Funerals must be one of the most depressing things in life.
Just the thought that a person you knew to be so full of life, energy, kindness and good has passed away and is being lowered a stiff lifeless body into a hole in the ground is a very depressing thought.

Most people start thinking of their own deaths, and they get more and more scared of it, fearing it could come and take them by surprise at any second.

As for me, I don’t really fear death, because I know it’ll come when it’s supposed to come, and when God wishes for it. But death makes me think a lot about my life.
With death eventually coming sooner or later, I can’t but think about the limited time I have on earth and what I’m doing with it. Am I really doing the stuff I want to do? Am I really enjoying life? Am I really going to look back at this life of mine with a smile when I’m on my dying bed? Are my priorities in life balanced like I want them?

In short, all the questions can be summed up into one: Is this the life I want to be living?
That’s a hard question though, because if answered in negative, it means that there are a bunch of life changing decisions that have to follow, and those are always very hard.

In my case, when I look at it from a distance, I’m happy with what I’ve done in my life up to now, but I do see that it’s time to change some things here and there, move on to new things here and there, build on what I have here and there.
After all, life isn’t constant, it’s a moving ever-changing thing.

One important thing though is that a person should always hang on to his optimism throughout life. I think it’s a very essential ingredient to having a great life.

British Lawmaker: Iraq War For Oil

Labour politician and former UK environment minister Michael Meacher has slammed Prime Minister Tony Blair and US President George Bush for starting a war he says was to secure oil interests.

“The reason they attacked Iraq is nothing to do with weapons of mass destruction, it was nothing to do with democracy in Iraq, it was nothing to do with the human rights abuses of Saddam Hussein.”

“It was principally, totally and comprehensively to do with oil, This was about assuming control over the Middle East and over Iraq, the second largest producer and also over Saudi Arabia next door.”

“It was about securing as much as possible of the remaining supplies of oil and also over the Caspian basin, which of course is Afghanistan.”

Michael Meacher

I think we all already knew that.
The US government doesn’t care about the Iraqis or the people of the Middle East, all they’re after is the oil.
