So much for democracy

Seventeen months after the Anglo-American invasion in which President George Bush promised to bring democracy to Iraq, the country’s American-approved Prime Minister, Iyad Allawi, yesterday introduced legislation allowing the Iraqi authorities to impose martial law, curfews, a ban on demonstrations, the restriction of movement, phone-tapping, the opening of mail and the freezing of bank accounts.

[…]

Iraq therefore entered into another fatal chapter of its history yesterday, and it didn’t look much like democracy.

  1. I find it hard to believe that Bush went to war to rescue an oppressed society and spread democracy. I mean, really, there are plenty of third world nations out there with oppressive governments. But, we went for one with oil. Oh, and one that Bush senior went after. Bush cares as much about the quality of life in Iraq as he cares about the quality of life in America. His leadership is borne of ambition, not patriotism. Of course, that wouldn’t really be leadership, would it?

  2. Bush doesn’t care about Iraqis or if they enjoy democracy or not. All he cares about is the Iraqi oil.

And again he doesn’t care for America or Americans. All he cares about is his personal interest and the interests of the people who pay him.

  3. I had the grave misfortune of hearing a right-wing supporter state that Kerry is not a candidate who understands the working man because he grew up priveleged, enjoyed an Ivy League education, and married wealthy. Bush Jr. grew up privileged, and not only doesn’t understand the working class, but doesn’t seem to understand or care to understand anybody other than the higher economic class. He is spending billions in money and a priceless quantity in life on an unjustified war. But, the defense contractors LOVE him right about now. Here’s hoping he’s not an eight year guy. God help the rest of the world, and God help America.
