There are various versions of the e-mails, but they generally insinuate that Obama is secretly a Muslim who attended a radical Islamic school in Indonesia. One of the e-mails charges that he’s a radical Muslim who refuses to recite the Pledge of Allegiance. Another e-mail claims that he was sworn into the Senate using a copy of the Quran. All of the allegations are false.

I don’t even know what to say or where to start about this…
Should I worry about the way Islam is made out to sound like a plague that everyone wants to distance themselves from?
Should I be wondering what the religion of a person has to do with them being electable to office or not?
Or should I just mind my own business and watch the US presidential elections as people judge the candidates on their race, religion and popularity instead of on how much good they’ll be able to do the country and how good a leader they will be?

You shouldn’t worry about it. You should accept it as a fact of life, in the western world, for the forseeable future. A Muslim couldn’t even get enough votes to qualify to be on the ballot for a US Presidential elections. What do you think are the odds that a Japanese-American or a German-American could have won a US Presidential election, during World War II?

Dunno. Do you think a Copt could ever have Mubarak’s job in Egypt? And Egypt has a much higher percentage of citizens who are Christian, than the US has citizens who are Muslim.
Or do you only apply this mode of thinking to the US?

How “good” for the country would it be, to have a Muslim President in the middle of the War on Terror? I assume you think it’d be pretty cool, but you do give Americans permission to disagree with you on that, right? 🙂
We’ve never had a Black President. We’ve never had a female President. We’ve had only a handful of CATHOLIC Presidents. The issue of whether or not we should vote for a Muslim isn’t even on our radar. If you think that makes us racist and primitive, so be it. We don’t tell people how they should vote in the US.
For what it’s worth, I briefly considered that Obama may be a closet Muslim. I’m convinced he’s not. If I thought he was, I wouldn’t vote for him. As it stands, I may. I don’t particularly like any of the candidates this year, and he seems like one of the least objectionable.

I think they should have equal chances to get the job as Muslims do, and that they shouldn’t be judged on what their religion is but on what their agenda is and what they can do for the country.

But well I think if there were a Muslim candidate who actually won, he’d be armed with a better understanding of Islam and would know that the war shouldn’t be waged against Islam, countries or groups but against the wrong ideology that some people are spreading and that enables them to recruit youth.

You may be right. But at the end of the day,, most people vote for the candidate that they trust the most to keep their own self-interests in mind. That usually (but not always) means voting for somebody who looks a lot like them, talks a lot like them, and has a background a lot like theirs. Most US Presidents have been White Anglo Saxon Protestants. Because most Americans are Protestant, White and at least approximately Anglo-Saxon. Kennedy and Reagan are the two notable recent US Presidents who don’t fit that description. Kennedy was Irish Catholic and Reagan was Irish Protestant (I think).
This is a landmark election. If Rudy Giuliani wins, he’s the first Italian-American President. If Obama wins, he’s the first African-American President. If Hillary Clinton wins, she’s the first female US President. If Ron Paul wins, he’s the first insane US President. On the other hand, we may elect another WASP President, which would be pretty boring, and also pointless since they all suck this time.
